How to Write Like a Real Person — That Readers Love to Read
Get out of your head and write from your heart
We had a maths teacher in school who spoke in one flat tone from start to finish of the lecture (nicknamed 1Tone). No modulation, no variation, just flatline talking.
He knew his numbers, but we were never interested in what he said. We’d be drawing his doodles (to compare later). Well, we were stuck, you see.
But readers aren’t.
They are not stuck. They don’t have to read everything. Unlike us, they can leave the room. So, no matter how interesting your content is, if you don’t sound interested in telling them, they aren’t interested in hearing it either.
This is where your human voice comes in. About being someone that your reader would want to meet. And know more.
1. Write like you talk.
Pay attention. I said write. Not edit.
When you sit down to write, just write. Write like you would talk to another person. Your lingo, your style. Even smile as you type, that’s fine.
- ditch the grammar,
- bring in the one-word sentence,
- a deliberate pause here…
